Description:Job Summary:
The scope of practice of the Cardiology nurse occurs within the framework of the nursing process and encompasses those nursing functions which assist the members as well as support all procedures in the Cardiology department. Nursing functions are directed toward providing continuity of care for the cardiology patients.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Prepares patients for appointments with providers and for Nuclear Cardiology under the direction of the physician/provider.
- Assists the Cardiologists with procedures requiring professional nursing, including but not limited to Nuclear Cardiology.
- Provides pre-procedural assessment and preparation, intra-procedural intervention and post-procedural evaluation. Utilizes this assessment for identification of actual and potential needs.
- Applies nursing judgment for tolerance of procedures and medications and communicates findings with the Cardiologist.
- Prepares and administers cardiovascular agents and other medications, per the physicians order.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the actions of the cardiovascular diagnostic and therapeutic agents.
- Assess patient response during chemically induced cardiology procedures.
- Responds to all medical and/or pharmacological reactions and medical emergencies, assuming the role as team leader until the attending Cardiologist or Emergency Medical Response Team arrives.
- Follows established Cardiology protocols to maintain a clean and safe working environment. Safeguards self and others against the hazards of toxic drugs. Disposes of biohazardous waste according to approved protocol and abides by federal, state and/or local standards regarding drug accountability.
- Maintains crash carts, defibrillator, and other emergency equipment and supplies.
- Demonstrates ability to use the electronic medical record. Documents medication administration, patient response to therapeutic interventions and procedures and all patient encounters.
- Relays messages between providers and patients as directed. Collects information and data required by providers such as laboratory and x-ray results, consultation reports, eetc..
- Communicates with consultants regarding laboratory studies and patient care. Arranges for follow-up care as needed or directed.
- Participates in staff meetings and attends in-service programs.
- Maintains and updates knowledge by attending continuing education programs related to Cardiology. Provides education for staff members.
- Is familiar with community resources available to patients.
- Is knowledgeable of Kaiser Permanente resources with whom to consult for information on additional resources.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience
- Two (2) years of current cardiology experience with at least one (1) year in cardiology inpatient or ambulatory environment required.
Education
- Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing required.
License, Certification, Registration
This job requires credentials from multiple states. Credentials from the primary work state are required at hire. Additional Credentials from the secondary work state(s) are required post hire.
- Registered Nurse License (Virginia) within 6 months of hire AND Registered Nurse License (Maryland) within 6 months of hire
OR
Compact License: Registered Nurse within 6 months of hire
Registered Nurse License (District of Columbia) within 6 months of hire
Basic Life Support
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support
Additional Requirements:
- In order to work effectively with patients, must have effective interpersonal and communications skills and be able to stand, walk, bend, and lift at least 50 pounds, hear, speak, and see.
- Current experience administering intravenous infusion required.
