Description
Job Summary:Under indirect supervision, performs a broad range of standard diagnostic procedures and tests on patients, in accordance with established guidelines, to assist the Ophthalmologist in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and vision disorders, including: Flurorescein/iris angiography, fundus/slit lamp photography, ophthalmic film development and conducts diagnostic procedures/therapy for eye muscle disorders (orthoptics). Follows Quality of Service and Universal Precautions Standards.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Upholds Kaiser Permanentes Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities and applicable state, federal and local laws. Performs fluorescein and iris angiography in color or black and white with mono or stereo photography. Performs fundus and slit lamp photography. Develops black and white ophthalmic photographs, maintains photographic suite, and monitors development of color films by outside vendor. Performs corneal endothelial cell count using specular microscope; derives accurate cell counts from photograph. Takes axial length measurements (A-scans); also performs B-scans. Performs slit lamp applanation and advanced tonometry. Performs keratometry to measure corneal curvature on intraocular lens patients. Conducts visual field testing using Goldmann and Humphrey automated perimeter. Checks visual acuity, uses lensometer and examines patient for abnormalities of color vision. Obtains patient history information; conducts patient education, records appropriate progress information, reports abnormal findings to physician. Arranges patient examination and treatment areas; prepares patients for examination, treatment or surgery; dilates patient eyes and/or places medicated eye drops into patient eyes. Initiates chart requests; assist with informed consents; and completes required documentation. Serves as first assist in OR and/or minor procedure room; prepares and passes instruments during minor eye surgeries, under direct supervision of surgeon. Conducts diagnostic procedures and therapy for eye muscle disorders (orthoptics). Maintains professional image, equipment accuracy and safety, quality assurance and quality of service standards. Serves as a mentor and conducts in-service for Ophthalmology Technicians and Medical Assistants. Establishes and maintains courteous, cooperative relations with the patients, physicians, and other personnel. Performs other related duties as required. Equipment Utilized: Humphrey Field Analyzer Goldmann Visual Fields A-scan Applanation Tonometer Lensometer Keratometer Assume other activities and responsibilities from time to time as directed.
Experience
Specific knowledge of Ophthalmic diseases, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. Demonstrated ability to operate/maintain ophthalmic diagnostic and/or ophthalmic photography equipment. Demonstrated ability to perform fluorescein angiography or certification in orthoptics (CO).
Education
- Degree in Ophthalmic Technology plus one (1) year practical experience or
- Equivalent Ophthalmic Technician Training (Certified Ophthalmic Tech) with three (3) years practical experience in a medical office or hospital.
License, Certification, Registration

Preferred Qualifications:
- QBS II Spanish Speaker Preferred.
- Project Management preferred.
- EPIC experience preferred.
- JCAHPO Certified Ophthalmic Technician required
- All current in future department locations.
