Description
FLEXIBLE: This internship role is scheduled to be flexible. Please be prepared to spend part of your time working remotely and part of your time working from the following location: 100 S. Los Robles Ave., Pasadena, 91101.Job Summary:
Note: THIS POSITION MUST BE REVIEWED WITH TOTAL COMPENSATION BEFORE POSTING. This position provides analytical support to a project or department. Under the guidance of a Project Manager/ Director, responsible for collecting and researching data, performing analysis, providing recommendations and presenting results.
Department Description:
The Department of Research & Evaluation has an integral role in the success of Kaiser Permanente Southern California by conducting high-quality, innovative translational research that benefits the health of its members and the communities from which they come. Our mission is to initiate and conduct high-quality, public-sector health services, epidemiologic, behavioral, and clinical research that has a demonstrable positive impact on the health and well-being of Kaiser Permanente Southern California members and the general population.
Project Description:
Choose your own adventure by working on one or more of these women's health research projects. Your co-mentors are an implementation scientist and urogynecologist, Heidi Brown, MD, and an epidemiologist in the KP Medical Device Surveillance and Assessment Program with experience using Python and R.
Women on the Go: This randomized trial compared two versions of an online program to support behavior change to prevent or improve incontinence symptoms, with the hypothesis that a tailored program would promote more regular engagement than a generic program. We also sought to compare rates of behavior change in each treatment arm and to determine whether engagement with the program mediated other behavior change.
Feasibility of Salpingectomy in General Surgery: This study seeks to demonstrate feasibility and safety of colorectal surgeons performing a gynecologic surgery to reduce ovarian cancer risk at the time of planned colorectal surgery through retrospective EHR data abstraction and analyses. Through this project you will gain familiarity with our electronic health record data resources, generation of HARM scores to compare risk among patients who underwent comparable colorectal surgeries with or without salpingectomy, and the experience collaborating with surgeons who will perform the minimal required chart review.
Updating a Registry of Urogynecologic Mesh: This study seeks to expand a prior KP registry that contains over 20,000 patients from multiple KP regions who underwent mid-urethral sling to treat stress urinary incontinence between 2009 and 2021. Our existing registry only contains data about retreatment in the operating room; this project expands the KPSC cohort in the existing registry to (1) include information about retreatment in the outpatient clinic setting; and (2) include patients who underwent other urogynecologic mesh implants. Through this project you will gain experience working with the national KP Medical Device Surveillance and Assessment Program and with the clinical data warehouse within KPSC.
