Job Summary
Clinical Pastoral Education Resident is responsible for Christian ministry to the spiritual and emotional, and relational health needs of all
patients, families, and staff regardless of age, race, gender, ethnicity, or religious preference. The CPE Resident learns a degree of
professional competence in the provision of spiritual care, learns about becoming integrated into the Department of Pastoral Care,
provides pastoral service to the patients/families/residents/clients in the Baptist Health System and participates in peer groups for
training and supervision in an accredited ACPE program with Baptist Health System. The resident will work to meet Level I outcomes
as listed in the Introduction under ACPE Standards. Completes established competencies for the position within designated
introductory period. Other related duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
General Functions:
• Participates in forming a community of concern for families, patients and staff. Participates in
volunteer, church and community activities to express pastoral role.
• Assumes a pastoral role in relationships, particularly in clinical setting.
• Utilizes personal and departmental resources in order to provide inservices, worship opportunities, and care to the felt need of the patients, families and employees
• Responds to consultations with physicians, ministers, families and others concerning patients'
religious needs.
• Reports on environment, within the hospital areas, to determine types of priorities needed for
ministry in the hospital.
• Assists in worship services at BHS facilities.
Department/Business Unit Functions:
• Represents the pastoral and prophetic voice of the Church
• Assists the department and facility in collaboration and support of Faith and Community Ministry
goals and projects
• Provides compassionate pastoral ministry to patients, families, and staff
• Consults with the healthcare team concerning patients' spiritual, emotional, and ethical needs
• Listens to the hospital and community environment to determine priorities needed for ministry in the
hospital
• Works with facility directors to evaluate the quality of pastoral care
• Assists in the initiation of innovative techniques of ministry in the hospital
• Participates with CPE Supervisor and BHS Pastoral Care Directors to provide quality Pastoral Care
at BHS
• Responds at all times during the working day for emergency care needs.
• Provides 24-hour On Call duty, as assigned.
• Performs floor visitations daily.
• Brings regular case and learning presentations.
• Sets learning goals consistent with developing specialty in ministry.
• Develops a learning emphasis as defined by ACPE Standards, program to a handbook, and the
learning contract between the supervisor, student, and mentor.
• Develops a specialty major project paper addressing the psycho/social dynamics, theological, and
ministry implications.
• Makes referrals to local clergy
• Distributes religious literature
• Utilizes resources efficiently and effectively
• Maintains safe environment
• Addresses patient population-specific needs
• Participates in Performance Improvement activities
Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION: Graduate from an accredited college or university and at least one year's work from a
theological school.
PREFERRED EDUCATION: Graduate academic/professional degree from an accredited theological school.
Master of Divinity or its equivalent.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: May range from seriously entertaining a call to vocational ministry to years as a
parish/congregational minister.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Demonstrates potential in competency in Level I and Level II CPE. Engage in
action-reflection model of learning. See and relate theology to professional and personal relationships.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE: Ordination or endorsement for ministry by a recognized religious
body and/or meet requirements for admission to CPE program
