Job Summary:In addition to the responsibilities listed below, this position is also responsible for driving the strategic direction of multiple large-sized medical centers (e.g., facilities with more than 300 licensed beds) and complex pharmacy service lines (e.g., acute care, outpatient, clinical, home infusion, centers of excellence) by building cost-effective pharmacy budgets, guaranteeing accurate benefits administration, directly directing pharmacy directors, supervisors, and staff in large sized service lines and facilities, and ensuring availability of all pharmacy systems (e.g., HealthConnect, EPIMS, POS) to promote productivity, performance, customer satisfaction, and patient safety; partnering with regional and national pharmacy teams to operationalize large-sized and highly complex strategic initiatives; developing and implementing strategic initiatives for area of responsibility with considerable scope; interfacing with and coordinating care across all hospitals, medical centers, and facilities in the region as patients are transferred in and out of represented medical centers/facilities; championing a culture of compliance, ethics, and integrity by ensuring ongoing compliance for area(s) of assigned responsibility and creating policies and procedures according to best practices and state and federal regulations (e.g., DEA, State Board of Pharmacy, HIPAA); acting as the lead subject matter expert to collaborate and consult on highly complex problems within and outside of pharmacy operations, participating on service area leadership teams as appropriate; prioritizing patient satisfaction by developing defined levels of member satisfaction scores for each area(s) of assigned responsibility; directing protocols for large-scale quality assurance activities and audits to ensure accuracy, patient safety, and identify areas for improvement.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Builds organizational capacity and prepares high potentials for growth opportunities and advancement; builds collaborative networks inside and outside the organization for self and others. Provides framework for soliciting and acting on performance feedback; drives collaboration to set goals and provide open feedback and coaching to foster performance improvement. Models and drives continuous learning and oversees the recruitment, selection, and development of talent; stays current with industry trends, benchmarks, and best practices; ensures performance management guidelines and expectations to achieve business needs. Acts as a thought leader on industry trends, benchmarks, and best practices; shares best practices within and across teams to drive improvement. Motivates and empowers teams; maintains a highly skilled and engaged workforce by aligning cross-functional resource plans with business objectives. Provides guidance when difficult decisions need to be made; creates opportunities for expanded scope of decision making and impact across teams.
- Oversees the operation of multiple units and/or departments by identifying member and operational needs; ensures the management of work assignment allocation and completion; translates business strategy into actionable business requirements; ensures products and/or services meet member requirements and expectations while aligning with organizational strategies. Engages strategic, cross-functional business units to champion and drive support for business plans and priorities; assumes responsibility for decision making; sets standards, measures progress, and ensures resolution of escalated issues. Sets and communicates goals and objectives; analyzes resources, costs, and forecasts and incorporates them into business plans; obtains and distributes resources. Anticipates and removes obstacles that impact performance; addresses performance gaps and implements contingency plans accordingly; ensures teams accomplish business objectives; serves as a subject-matter expert and trusted source to executive leadership; provides influence and consultation in the development of the larger organizational or business strategy.
- Drives state-of-the-art innovative drug therapy implementation and development plans by: developing, communicating, and overseeing the implementation of strategies, programs and processes to influence market and/or program-wide pharmaceutical and drug use utilization; directing the development, implementation and re-engineering of programs which promote cost-effective utilization of pharmaceuticals; closely collaborating with senior health care providers to gather relevant sources on potential changes within the market and upcoming new drugs and analyzes trends to forecast the impacts of new drugs on the teams drug use management; tracking, assessing, and forecasting the impact of drug products and other pharmaceutical developments upon the program and across the KP enterprise to ensure continued growth and success; tracking and assessing various drug use management metrics and dashboards and following up to hold others accountable; creating standards for application strategies to ensure achievement of member financial and therapeutic objectives; and evaluating holistic sets of member data and setting strategic directions that catalyze organizational change.
- Oversees drug education and training efforts by: evaluating industry expectations for education and ensuring KP meets and exceeds educational needs for patients and providers to positively impact patient compliance and provider prescribing practices.
- Provides pharmaceutical patient care and drug therapy by: leading the maintenance of productive relationships with care providers and members; providing strategic guidance on the collaboration with regional multi-disciplinary committees to develop, update the drug formulary, develop clinical guidelines pertinent to best outcomes, and communicate improvements to teams for dissemination; approving and planning innovative design efforts for therapeutic regimens and/or programs applicable across patients in multiple services while integrating patient-specific disease and drug information, current practice standards, ethical issues, and quality-of-life issues, and pharmacoeconomic principles; developing strategic goals for regional, hospital, hospital-based, or ambulatory drug initiatives, other formulary management activities, and/or KP-related drug trials; establishing the process to ensure the utilization of targeted medications and medication classes are safe, rational and cost-effective prescribing; directing processes to understand clinicians or department-level decisions, support, and feedback to strategize cutting-edge, long-term support for the drug use process; and championing the development of future-oriented pharmaceutical care and optimal utilization of resources to and from hospital, acute, and ambulatory patient-care settings for all patients in area of responsibility.
- Leads team to monitor services in compliance with state and federal laws, all regulatory bodies, established quality standards and organizational service standards by: ensuring that appropriate processes and systems are in place and making improvements to meet projected future requirements and industry standard to ensure service and operational regulatory and all compliance requirements are met; leading the planning, development, and implementation as well as oversight of policies, procedures, facilities, and service delivery, performing in accordance with applicable standards as they relate to the assigned department; providing thought leadership to establish best practices and processes for the investigation of, response to, and resolution of highly complex member inquiries, removing significant blockers, and addressing concerns from teams with innovation, ingenuity, and strategic direction; and establishing a collaborative and quality-focused culture to enable partnerships with physicians, other medical professionals, and health plan personnel to assess, resolve, and assure consistent state-of-the-art quality and process outcome measures.
- Minimum five (5) years of experience in a leadership role.
- Minimum five (5) years of experience in an integrated delivery system or multi-facility hospital system.
- Doctorate of Pharmacy or equivalent degree (e.g., Bachelors of Pharmacy from a School of Pharmacy) AND completion of a Post-Graduate Year 1 (PGY1) residency at time of hire AND minimum five (5) years of experience as a Pharmacist and/or Pharmacist Intern in pharmacy or a directly related field OR Doctorate of Pharmacy or equivalent degree (e.g., Bachelors of Pharmacy from a School of Pharmacy) AND minimum seven (7) years of experience as a Pharmacist and/or Pharmacist Intern in pharmacy or a directly related field.
- Minimum three (3) years of experience managing operational or project budgets.
- Minimum five (5) years of experience in a leadership role with direct reports.
- Pharmacist License (California) required at hire
- National Provider Identifier within 6 months of hire
